A TOWN castle will be converted into an open air theatre for the first on-site shows ‘since the 1990s’.
Organisers hope the first will be a September production of The Pirates of Penzance by the Illyra Theatre Company.
Between 250 and 500 people will be allowed to watch the show.
Co-organiser Peter Matthews, also a councillor, said: “It will be a bring your own seats and picnics event. In the past, the castle has been used for fetes, for festivals and for the fireworks display.
“But the display grew too large for the castle and from that time, English Heritage were reluctant to let anything go on because of health and safety fears.
“Now the people of Berkhamsted have begun to regain access to their castle.”
Councillors will vote on whether to push ahead with plans in a committee meeting on Monday.
