A chart-topping singer who lost her voice will be among the performers at Berkhamsted’s third annual Ukes For Unicef ukulele festival on Saturday, March 1.

Sam Brown, the daughter of rock and roll star Joe Brown, is best known for the single Stop! which reached number four in the charts in 1989.

She toured with Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra for 10 years and provided sung backing vocals for big-name bands including Spandau Ballet and Pink Floyd.

But it was after losing her voice in 2005 that she set up Sam Brown’s International Ukulele Club of Sonning Common – named after the village where she lives.

The club – one of several she now runs – will be coming to Berkhamsted after performing at prestigious events such as the Ukulele Festival of Great Britain.

Another act coming to the town – ukulele player Nico’o – will be travel all the way from France for the festival.

Ukes for Unicef is being organised by the Berkhamsted Ukulele Random Players (BURP!).

Founder Hamish Currie said: “We have got some really top-class acts coming here. Sam was huge – Jools rated her as one of the best voices in the country.

“She’s top of the bill for us and is bringing something like 30 people to play at the festival.”

There will also be ukulele workshops for beginners and improvers, opportunities to play and purchase ukuleles, as well as a bar and some light refreshments.

The festival will again be opened by ukulele-playing children – this year from Berkhamsted’s Thomas Coram School.

Radio Dacorum will be covering the event live, as it coincides with the station’s second birthday. BURP! also featured on the station during its opening day and its first birthday.

All acts will be performing for free, so event proceeds can go entirely to Unicef. It is suggested that guests donate £5 to the global children’s charity.

The event is sponsored by BURP! and Berkhamsted’s Junction Nine Design Consultants.

Ukes for Unicef will be held in Berkhamsted Civic Centre from 11.30am to 5pm next Saturday.
