Why it’s finally time to break this expensive habit...

HEMEL Hempstead band The Expensive Habits play their final farewell show after 13 years together at The Flag in Watford on Saturday.

The band was formed by a group of Hemel Hempstead School mates – Chris ‘Dog’ Brown, the lead vocalist, Dan Greaves, vocals and percussion, Mark ‘Sparky’ Foenander on bass, drummer Jack Stow, and Dan McMorran, percussion and inspiration.

Lead guitarist Matt ‘Trucker’ Tralaw came on board when the boys discovered him at a battle of the bands contest playing an awesome solo to Sweet Home Chicago with the guitar behind his head.

Once they’d poached Trucker the line-up was complete and since 1999 they’ve played a multitude of local venues and festivals, as well as regularly at some of central London’s best clubs.

In 2005 they released their debut album Roll On which showcases their distinctive sound of big-riff rhythm and blues, dancey beats and vocal harmonies.

This year Sparky – known as Mark to those outside the band – announced that he was planning to move his family abroad in search of the good life.

The band would never be the same with new members, so sadly the time has come for The Expensive Habits to say goodbye for good.

But they don’t want to go without leaving their loyal friends and fans something to remember them by and, as a result, have been busily recording an album of their best and most recent material.

The majority is recorded and they are hoping to raise funds to help pay for the final studio recording and mixing by asking for donations on the door of their final gig instead of charging a ticket price.

Trucker and Jack are also excited that fans will be able to see their other band Sweetcornbread which, along with friends and DJ Birdfeeder, will be supporting The Habits on the night.

Cornbread fuse blues, folk, funk, reggae and punk with an upbeat goodtime feel. They’ve played Waveform, Nozstock, Ballstock and Wezstock since 2010.

The Expensive Habits would love to see as many faces as possible on Saturday night to say thank you for the love and support over the years.

The Flag in association with ICM presents The Expensive Habits Farewell Show at The Flag, Station Road, Watford, WD17 1ET on Saturday, September 29 from 8pm until late.
