A former Berkhamsted School pupil has raised £1,500 for charity after returning to the town to perform.

Singer Robert Habermann, backed by the Hertford-based Phoenix Big Band, entertained crowds at the Berkhamsted Civic Centre in High Street for Iain Rennie Hospice at Home (IRHH).

Robert was a student in Berkhamsted from 1960 to 1964 and worked in the catering industry before giving it up to become a full-time singer and entertainer.

He models his singing style on Frank Sinatra, but extends his range to include standards from Broadway shows and the Great American songbook, using many of his own arrangements.

The Phoenix Big Band, now nearly 20 years old, have a repertoire that includes charts written by arrangers like Sammy Nestico and Bill Holman.

IRHH spokesman Brian Fowler said: “This was great entertainment and we are extremely grateful to both Robert and the band for helping to raise such a generous amount to boost our funds.”
