Nick Bitel, chairman of Sport England and CEO of the London Marathon, was the guest speaker at the Herts Sports Partnership AGM.

Bitel gave a vibrant account which provided an insight into the highs and lows of one of the UKs highest profile events, the London Marathon.

Interesting snippets included the fact that in the first ever event, in 1981, just five per cent of the runners were female and in 2013, this had increased to 38 per cent.

With his Sport England hat on, Bitel then spoke about the future of community sport and he was positive about the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The brief AGM official business then highlighted the Partnership’s success during 2013/14, including the 10-year anniversary of the organisation.

HSP Chairman Grahame Bowles said: “I was delighted that we were able to attract such a high profile guest to our AGM and was much encouraged by Nick’s approach to community sport and the importance of sports development.

“It is always good to meet up with colleagues in sport from around the county and Monday evening gave plenty of opportunity for this.”
