A RACING car driver has won a prestigious six-part event by finishing first in all six races and posting the six fastest lap times.

Tom Smith, 31, from Hempstead Road, Bovingdon, won the Historic Sports Car Club’s Guards Trophy last year after winning every event of the championship.

Race venues included the Silverstone Grand Prix track, Brands Hatch and Donington Park.

Tom has been in blistering form in 2012, where he has raced four times in total, winning three of the events outright and finishing second in the other.

Tom said: “It’s a bit more of a laid-back atmosphere with quite a lot of old, rich folk just wanting to experience a childhood dream. So although it can still be competitive, it is often a bit more relaxed than more modern racing competitions.”

Tom and his dad, Doug Smith, 65, run an MG restoration service at home, where they build, restore and race road MGs.

In total, Tom has won 70 out of 131 Historic races in his MGB Roadster.

The Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC), based in Silverstone, is the top organiser of Historic motor racing in the UK.

The HSCC was set up in 1966 by a small group of enthusiasts who were frustrated at the lack of races for older cars and wanted to stop them being modified beyond their original specification. Pre-1966 cars must be used in all races.

Tom has also competed in a number of races across Europe.
