The highlights of a tough weekend for Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club were the men’s second XI who put in a stunning display against Letchworth and the ladies’ firsts who had a positive start in the new league after yet another promotion.
The men’s fourth team were also very unlucky, conceding a goal in the last minute to lose a close game 4-3 to Shefford and Sandy.
The men’s twos were at their very best to come back from a goal behind to see off Letchworth 4-1, with Roger Payton bagging a hat-trick.
They went down to a sloppy goal after some wayward passing but a goal from Julian Laxon restored parity.
Payton then struck his treble to stun Letchworth and earn all the points for Berko.
The ladies firsts, meanwhile, played their first game of the campaign away at Broxbourne, with both sides having been promoted to Division One last season.
Berkhamsted bossed the early stages of the match and took a deserved lead with a fine strike from Faye Potton after a super passing move.
The second half saw the home team push for an equaliser and it duly arrived in scrappy style ten minutes from time.
The men’s fourths were unlucky to loose in the dying moments of their clash with Sandy after two goals from Ben Moorhouse and one from Tom Moorhouse.
Elsewhere, the men’s firsts lost 3-1 to Letchworth, the thirds were beaten 6-1 by Shefford & Sandy II, and the fifths were thrashed 5-0 by Winchmore Hill & Enfield IV.
