BERKHAMSTED Gymnastics Club enjoyed further success as two club members competed at The 2012 Heathrow Invitational competition.

Youngsters Poppy Wager Leigh and Claudia Chmielowska both won gold medals as they demonstrated the impressive progress they have made at the club.

Poppy, 10, competed strongly on all four pieces of equipment with clean routines and an assured performance.

She held off strong competition in the 10 to 11-year-olds’ age category from members of London clubs and, with her mature and focused attitude, walked away with four of the five gold medals up for grabs.

Poppy won gold for her overall performance but also secured gold apparatus medals on bars, beam and floor – she narrowly missed a clean sweep of golds as she finished second on vault by just 0.05 of a mark.

In the FIG Junior Challenge competition, meanwhile, 14-year-old Claudia faced tough competition from a number of high level gymnasts.

With new skills on all four pieces, Claudia had no illusions about the difficulty of the challenge that she faced, but she knuckled down and went for broke.

Her bars and beam went well, however one of her tumbles wasn’t as good as she had hoped, leaving her a lot to deliver on the vault.

Claudia pulled out all the stops and gambled with an new and complex vault with lots of difficulty – executing it brilliantly to take silver medal position overall and earning her a gold for the vault.
