THE Cavendish School senior netball team have been crowned champions of the U19 National Sports College Tournament 2012.
The girls put in an excellent display in the competition at Hinchingbrooke School in Cambridgeshire, and saw off pre-tournament favourites Wilmslow Sports College 7-5 in their final game to jointly lift the trophy.
The tournament was played in a round robin format and Cavendish won three of their first four games, beating Redborne Sports College 6-5, losing 11-8 to King Edward V11 Sports College, winning 9-4 over Lymm Sports College and seeing off Cardinal Langley Sports College 12-2.
The tournament then went down to the final match against Wilmslow, and Cavendish bagged the first two goals before digging deep to secure the win.
“It was one of the most exciting games of netball I have ever witnessed,” said team manager Amanda Tizard. “The Cavendish girls battled like they had never done before.
“Never have I been so proud.”
The result meant that Cavendish and Wilmslow ended up tied for first place, and the two sides shared the trophy.
“The girls demonstrated not only excellent netball skills, but also great sportsmanship which made them deserving winners,” added Mrs Tizard.
“It has been between six and eight years that these girls have played together in my team and they have been the best ever!
“What gives me great pleasure is the girls’ love of netball and how they are all playing or officiating in community teams, allowing them to continue netball after leaving school.”
