TEENAGE racing sensation Ed Brand has taken one of Britain’s most prestigious karting titles – the annual Kartmasters event.

The 17-year-old from Dagnall claimed the victory with a lights-to-flag victory at Brandon in Lincolnshire.

Brand has been competing in the event for a number of years, but had never before managed to claim top spot on the podium.

However, the youngster always looked in control at this year’s event, claiming pole position for the first of the two finals with impressive performances in the heats.

The Strawberry Racing driver stormed to victory in that race, putting him on the front row for the grand final.

Brand started well and built up a good lead, which, despite a late flourish from team-mate Jack Marshall, helped him to claim the narrow victory.

“I’m thankful,” Brand said afterwards. “I did my job and that was it, but it was fortunate that the flag came out when it did. Had the race gone on for another lap then I don’t think it would have been me standing on the top step of the podium.

“I’m delighted, though. This is the first time I’ve won and it’s a great feeling.”

Brand was hopeful that his win will have impressed some of the watching car team managers, saying: “Whoever wants to give me a free drive, I’m available.”
