A MOUNTAIN biker from Berkhamsted has been crowned national champion after a top display in Wales.
Philip Atwill, 16, picked up the title at the prestigious Llangollen meet which attracted some of Britain’s best riders.
Philip – who rides for the Madison Saracen Downhill team – beat over 30 competitors as he stormed to glory in the youth category.
His time of 2 minutes and 22 seconds was also good enough to place him 22nd overall out of over 300 competitors of differing ages.
Philip’s dad Clive was rightly proud of his son’s achievement.
“He did brilliantly,” he said. “The course is surely the steepest and gnarliest track Britain.”
Philip began racing at Aston Hill at the age of nine, and has thrived at the sport ever since.
As well as his national title, he is also currently sitting in top spot in the North Wales Downhill Mountain Biking series with one race remaining.
