A youngster from Berkhamsted Lawn Tennis & Squash Rackets Club will head to Paris next month to represent Great Britain in his first taste of international tennis.
Joel Pierleoni, 10, has been going from strength to strength recently and will represent Team GB in their clash against hosts France.
Over the past 18 months Joel has been recognised as an LTA future star, finished fourth in the UK Nationals and is now ranked Number 1 in Hertfordshire for his age.
“It’s going to be great playing for GB. I’m excited to play against foreign players,” said Joel. “It will be a great experience.”
Joel travels to Paris on February 13 as part of a team of four boys and four girls. Team GB will have a Davis Cup-style match against their French counterparts, running over two days before the players compete in an U11 national tournament.
Both events will give Joel a good indication of where he currently sits against international players of his age.
Berkhamsted Elite Tennis Academy director Tyrell Diaz Stevens said: “The experience of competing internationally is so important for up and coming players.
“They will learn about different cultures and the work ethic of players from different countries.
“This will open Joel’s eyes and hopefully inspire him even more.”
The Paris event is the first of five international trips on the cards in 2014.
Joel will also be competing on the U12 Tennis Europe circuit for the first time – travelling to Spain, Austria and again to France throughout the year.
