A Berkhamsted School pupil has been crowned winner of the prestigious Scottish U16 Championship after a stunning display at Strathmore.

Alice Hewson, 15, birdied her way to a superb six-under-par 66 in the final round of the competition to claim a two-shot victory over English U15 champion Sophie Madden.

She produced eight birdies in her final round and finished the 36-hole championship on five-under-par.

The par-5 18th hole proved to be the decider, with Alice rolling home for birdie to clinch the title.

Berkhamsted Golf Club member Alice – a previous winner of the English U13 title and former Herts & East Region Schools Champion– becomes the fourth successive England player to hold the title.

The victory should secure Alice a place in the Junior Vagliano Trophy in June; a tournament pitting Great Britain and Ireland against Europe at Chantilly in Paris.

Alice, from Potten End, also helped England to win the team trophy in Strathmore, combining with Madden and Eloise Healey to finish eight shots ahead of Ireland.

Alice is coached by Lawrence Farmer at Berkhamsted Golf Club, and is well supported by the club’s ladies’ section and club professional John Clarke.

She is also a national level swimmer, representing the newly-founded Berkhamsted Swimming Club and achieving four national times last summer as well as winning the 50m backstroke at this year’s county championships.
