HEMEL Hempstead Town’s first XI saved the club’s blushes as they prevented a clean sweep of defeats.
With Town’s five other teams suffering losses, the first team saw off Hoddesdon I to move up to second place in the league.
Nick Hodgins was the star for Hemel with the ball, ending with figures of 5-81, while Riccy Mohamed smashed 90 not out to help the side to the win.
It was bad news for Hemel II, however, as they went down to Preston I in a game they should have won.
At one stage, Preston were 56-7, but recovered to post a total of 207, and Hemel’s chase finished 31-runs short of the target.
The third XI also disappointed as they were beaten by St Margaretsbury II.
Ed Canham finished with figures of 3-37 but it was not enough to prevent the defeat.
Elsewhere, Hemel IV slumped to a loss at the hands of St Albans III.
Only wicket keeper Jim Birnie (41) and Steve Smith (26) put up any resistance with the bat as Town were bowled out for 104 – a total which St Albans eclipsed comfortably.
And it was a similar story for Hemel’s fifth and six sides as they were seen off by Mill Hill Village II and Preston IV, respectively.
