Hoddesdon Town 3 Berkhamsted 2
BERKHAMSTED have been knocked out of the Carlsberg FA Vase by Hoddedson Town.
Hoddesdon took a three-goal lead, before Berko rallied in an attempt to take the game into extra-time with a spirited comeback.
It was not to be for the Comrades, though, and they will have to wait until next year for another shot at Vase glory.
During a bright start by Berko, Tony Burnett put the first chance of the game over the crossbar and Tyler Hatherly tried his luck with a few long range shots for the visitors.
And the Comrades should have taken the lead when Simon Carmichael played the ball to Burnett, whose shot came back off the bar before Josh Chamberlain put the rebound wide.
In an open game, hosts Hoddesdon began to create chances and the opening goal came in the 29th minute from the penalty spot after Berko keeper Ed Farmer brought down a Town forward.
And the home side doubled their lead before half-time courtesy of a Josh Smith effort.
Berko looked to respond after the interval, but a defensive mix up allowed Jamie Brandon to tap in the crucial third goal.
However, Berko kept plugging away and Mark Welling soon pulled a goal back to make the score 3-1 after doing well to control a bouncing ball.
A Carmichael header was then saved and Comrades boss Mick Vipond brought on Russell Clark and Micky O’Farrell to try and rescue the match.
The height of O’Farrell proved useful as Welling’s long throws were causing chaos – and the duo combined well as an O’Fareell flick found Burnett who made it 3-2 to set up a grandstand finish.
Berko did all they could to salvage the draw and Hatherly saw his effort come back off the post, but Hoddesdon rode their luck to seal the win.
And Berko boss Vipond was under no illusions as to why his team had lost.
“We should have beaten them and there are four reasons why we didn’t,” he said.
“Number one is that we need to get our injured and suspended players back, number two is that we need to be more consistent, number three is that we need to take our chances and number four is that I need to add to the squad.”
