Tring Corinthians produced a gutsy performance in torrential rain and mud to gain a rare double over Totternhoe and move up to fourth place in the SSML Division Two league table.
Corries faced a bombardment of set pieces in the first half but defended stoutly and resolutely and created several chances of their own on the counter-attack.
On 20 minutes Andy Humphreys was released on the left and beat the full-back. He crossed for Trevor Gibbs, whose shot was well saved, but Ben Alcock was on hand to sweep the rebound home to give Tring the lead.
Still the set pieces came but Totternhoe were unable to carve out a real chance. Indeed the only save Corries keeper Dave Adamson needed to make in the first half was a back header from his own team-mate, man of the match Aaron West.
On 35 mins it got even better for Tring. Again Humphreys was involved as he put Alcock through – Alcock danced around the keeper but had his shot blocked, and Joe Jary was on hand to lash the rebound home via a slight deflection for 2-0.
Totternhoe came out firing in the second half but again the resolute Tring side were solid and they nearly scored a freak goal when keeper Adamson launched a clearance that looped over the Totternhoe keeper but got stuck in the mud three yards out.
However, Totternhoe struck back and reduced the deficit via a set piece, which Tring uncharacteristically failed to clear.
At the other end, Humphreys was still a threat and fired over for Tring, but they were let down too often by the final ball.
On 80 mins came controversy. Rob Lear hit a perfectly timed tackle in the box but the referee astounded everyone by pointing to the spot. Adamson made himself big and Totternhoe spurned the chance by smashing the ball over the bar.
Desperate to salvage a point, Totternhoe played with four strikers and launched the ball forward repeatedly but left gaps at the back.
In the 93rd minute Will Salmon danced through the Totternhoe defence and put in Stuart Howe, who sealed a well earned victory by converting his first goal in senior football.
