Tring Athletic showed few signs of rustiness as they earned all three points against Colney Heath following a two-week layoff.

Jack Sunderland struck early on, and Tony Fields wrapped up the win for Tring after the break.

Sunderland’s fifth-minute goal had a big element of luck about it as his shot-cum-cross drifted over Colney keeper Tom Blackman and into the far corner.

Athletic keeper Mike Underwood was forced into a good save with his legs 10 minutes later, before Tring had a superb chance to double their lead.

Andy Hughes saw his initial header hit the post and his second strike hit a defender, before the ball came back to him again to head straight into the arms of the grateful Blackman.

Sunderland had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down as the first half came to an end, and Colney began to press hard for an equaliser after the break.

Jordan Lumsden and Josh Humbert both had decent chances to level things up for the visitors, but it was Tring who netted again to secure the win as Fields finished well from Stewart King’s perfectly-weighted cut-back.
