The future of Bedmond Ladies FC has been saved by a sponsorship deal that will ensure grass roots football can continue to be played at the club.
Innovative medical device company NuVasive – which focuses on developing minimally disruptive surgical products and procedures for the spine – came to the rescue of the team who had been struggling for players and financial support during the 2014/2015 season.
However, two members of the team – Suneesha Bheekhee and Sarah Gunn – work at NuVasive, and they approached the company for financial support.
Bedmond Ladies secretary/manager Kerry Osborne said: “We are very grateful to NuVasive as, without their support, the team couldn’t uphold its financial commitments for playing and training facilities, equipment or advertising without having to increase fees for players to an unfair and unrealistic level.
“Ladies’ football is an up and coming sport and it is essential that the opportunity of help and support be given to the ladies’ game to ensure its progression, popularity and accessibility continues to improve.”
The team had an excellent season, improving their league standing to finish fifth in Division Three of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire County Girls and Women’s Football League.
They were also one of only a few teams to complete the season with an impeccable discipline record, receiving no cards or fines as they adhered to the respect and fair play policies.
The team are hoping this record will attract new players to the club, putting them in a position to challenge for promotion next season.
