Kings Langley Ladies bowed out of the County Cup at the first hurdle, but showed grit and determination in trying to bridge the five-level gap between themselves and Sawbridgeworth.

The visiting defence was immediately up against it in the early exchanges, with both Mary Hogan and April Langton making timely clearances against a fast and disciplined Sawbridgeworth attack.

Kings keeper Vicky Taylor pulled off several good saves – including one from a penalty – while Louise Waters worked hard on the right flank.

The Kings attacking unit of Kim Nield, Amy Earthrowl, Nicole Barrett and Meg Burrows tried to make a breakthrough at the other end, but it was Sawbridgeworth who began to take charge of proceedings and took a commanding 5-0 lead in at half-time.

The second half saw Sawbridgeworth extend their advantage and, despite blocked shots from Burrows and Earlthrow late on in the game, the hosts were good value for the win.

Kings return to league action on Sunday in an away match against Bedmond Ladies. Kick-off 2pm at Toms Lane.
