BERKHAMSTED have clinched the MSSML Division One title with three games to spare as the side ran out 2-0 winners over Cockfosters on Saturday.

The team will compete in the Premier Division next season after topping the league in each of their first two seasons as a club.

Comrades manager Mick Vipond paid tribute to everybody at Broadwater, and said the title was testament to the efforts of everyone involved with the club.

“It’s a really big club effort,” said Vipond. “It’s been excellent to do what the club has done, not just the players, but everyone.

“There are so many people to thank - the committee, the people who do the kits and food, and of course the supporters who have been great. I also want to pay a special mention to Keith Hardy who has been with me for many years.”

With promotion already secured, Berko could play with the freedom of knowing they had little to lose against Cockfosters, and the fluency of their play reflected that from the kick-off.

The Comrades almost fashioned an early goal as Aaron Usmani’s header was scrambled away via the post, and it did not take long for Vipond’s side to open the scoring.

Matt Wardle’s corner bounced in the area and Danny Power reacted first to loop a header into the net.

Playing with confidence and verve, Berko continued to press and James Armstrong doubled his side’s advantage with his 39th goal of the season.

The prolific forward robbed the Cockfosters keeper of possession and rolled the ball home to put the Comrades 2-0 ahead.

The second half continued in the same manner as the first, as Tony Burnett and Simon Carmichael came close to extending Berko’s lead, but there were no further goals and the Comrades held on comfortably for their title-winning victory.

“This time last year we said promotion was a brilliant achievement but we weren’t necessarily expecting to do it again straight away,” said Vipond.

“But now there is a lot of talk going on between myself and the club to make sure that everything is sorted for the Premier Division next season.

“Hopefully we can add a few more players to the squad.

“I’m now looking forward to a couple of months rest now after what has been a pretty hectic couple of years!”
