Prolific striker Ben Makey took his tally to 43 for the season as he fired Hemel Hempstead Town nine points clear at the top of the Calor League Southern Premier Division.

Mackey struck twice in the second half to sink Chippenham 2-0 at Vauxhall Road to claim the outright Tudors record for most goals scored in a single season.

With Chesham not in action on Tuesday night, the victory opens up Hemel’s commanding lead at the summit again and puts them one step closer to the title.

Hemel started the game brightly and hit the woodwork twice in quick succession when Jordan Parkes and Lewis Toomey both saw efforts strike the crossbar.

The Tudors continued to press and were given a glorious chance to take the lead when Parkes was brought down in the area.

Mackey stepped up to take the resulting penalty, but he saw his kick crash against the post and away to safety.

It did not take the striker long to make amends, though, as he broke the deadlock two minutes after the interval – volleying in at the far post from a fine David King cross.

To their credit, Chippenham continued to battle, but the game was put to bed when Mackey bagged his second goal of the game.

Livewire forward Lewis Toomey was bundled over in the penalty area, and this time Mackey made no mistake from the spot.

Next up for Hemel is a mouthwatering home derby with St Albans on Saturday.
