BERKHAMSTED fans do not have much longer to wait for competitive football to return to Broadwater as they kick off the new season on Saturday.

Mick Vipond’s side entertain Harpenden Town in the Herts Charity shield, and the game will give the Berko boss a chance to get a close look at his young side ahead of the start of the league campaign.

There are set to be a number of new faces on show, with Vipond hoping to add at least one more striker and a centre back to his squad before Saturday.

Last season’s MSSML top scorer Jimmy Hill will be the danger man for Harpenden.

If the scores are level after 90 minutes, the match will go to a penalty shoot out, with the winners travelling to Tring Athletic or Hoddesdon Town in the quarter-final of the competition.

The Comrades also have an exciting friendly in prospect on Tuedsay night, as they host Chesham United.

The Berkhamsted Reserves, meanwhile, recorded a 3-2 win at Tring Corinthians.

In new Comrades boss Dave Walters’ first game in charge, Ben Gomm opened the scoring for Tring, before Chris Chance struck either side of half-time for Berko to turn the game on its head.

Michael Adeyemi marked his debut for the Comrades with a snapshot for to make it 3-1 and Ed Piotroski pulled one back for Corries late on.
