Two women who helped expose the notorious failings of Mid Staffordshire hospitals have been congratulated by the West Herts NHS Trust on their new year honours.

Samantha Jones, chief executive of the Trust covering Hemel Hempstead, Watford and St Albans hospitals, has described whistleblower Julie Bailey’s CBE honour as ‘well deserved’, along with the OBE awarded to former nurse Helene Donnelly who also uncovered malpractice at the infamous Midlands hospitals.

Mrs Jones’ Operation Onion care initiative was saluted in the report by Robert Francis QC into poor standards of care and high death rates at Mid Staffs.

Ms Bailey was invited to speak to West Herts staff in September, and all were encouraged to read her book on her experiences.

Mrs Jones said: “What happened at Mid Staffs was unacceptable and the NHS has many lessons to learn. Helene and Julie played key roles in exposing the failings and their honours are well deserved. As a Trust we are committed to being open and transparent, and proactively encourage staff to come forward if they have concerns.”
