THE hard work of the Friends of Tring Memorial Gardens has paid off as news came this week that the public space has won a Green Flag Award

Volunteers set up the initiative in March to spruce up the gardens and did their first planting project in May.

The award application, which was made by Dacorum Borough Council, came under risk when vandals caused thousands of pounds of damage last November.

The council had just spent about £50,000 on the beauty spot ready for the inspection but it was forced to close the gardens to the public for repair.

The police also investigated and visited schools to explain the importance of the gardens.

Tring Memorial Gardens is among three green spaces in the area that have Green Flag Awards.

The borough council was also successful in retaining the Green Flag for both Chipperfield Common and Berkhamsted’s Canal Fields.

Councillor Julie Laws, who oversees environment and sustainability, said: “Our green spaces are important to us, and we’re committed to making sure they’re safe, attractive and well-maintained.

“The local community plays an important role in keeping the parks at their best and we’re keen to see new volunteers joining the established ‘Friends’ groups at each of the three sites.

“Gaining yet another Green Flag in Dacorum is a fantastic achievement which recognises not only the council’s hard work, but also the strong commitment that our ‘Friends’ groups have made to looking after these precious spaces.”
