Thousands follow Hertfordshire’s gritters thanks to Twitter

Herts County Council’s Highways Twitter account now has more than 8,000 followers, County Hall has announced.

Even though it’s been quite a mild winter so far, the #GritterTwitter hashtag has grown in reach, keeping people up to date with what’s happening on the roads, and letting people know when the gritters are going to be out.

Councillor Terry Douris, the cabinet member for highways, said: “With its up to the minute information on incidents affecting travel around Hertfordshire from our transport control centre, details of major planned road closures, as well as the popular #GritterTwitter, @Herts_Highways is proving a great way to keep residents informed.

“For many people Twitter is their first port of call when they encounter traffic issues and our use of the innovative hash tag #GritterTwitter has really caught on around the country.”
