Commuters will be in for a long journey home following the closure of the M25 anti-clockwise following a serious incident earlier this afternoon.

The motorway is shut between junctions 23 and 21a after a lorry carrying cooking oil and foodstuff overturned, spilling its contents and causing a fire on the carriageway.

Emergency services remain on scene alongside structural engineers assessing damage to the road and overhead gantry, and a police investigation is under way.

The road will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so but the closure is expected to last for several hours, and during rush hour.

The Highways Agency advises road users wishing to use the M25 anti-clockwise to exit the M25 at junction 23 and take the A1(M) north; exit at junction 3 and join the A414 west. Then take the A405 south and rejoin the M25 at junction 21, or avoid the area if possible.
