There was ‘not much left’ of the caravan being towed by a Volvo after a smash with a lorry on the M1, say police.

Officers were called to clean up the mess just before Junction 6A on the London-bound stretch of the motorway just after 1.05pm today.

They have closed lanes one to three of the four-lane stretch of motorway to clear the debris, causing long tailbacks as only one lane remains open.

Police spokesman Olivia Finucane said: “The caravan was really badly hit. It looks like there’s not much left.”

East of England Ambulance Service spokesman Gary Sanderson said that one person was injured in the collision.

An ambulance is now taking the man – who has an eye injury – to Watford General Hospital.
