A SCOUT group has taken the first steps in its quest to raise £40,000 for a new hut roof.
The 1st Apsley Scout Group has set a target of six months to raise the total, and started the Raise the Roof campaign with a bag packing day as Sainsbury’s in Apsley Mills.
The dedicated team of scouts raised £1,044 over the course of the day.
Chief fundraiser Steve Cook said: “It was fantastic and is a really good start towards our total. Just another £39,000 to go now!”
The group hopes to begin work on the new roof on Durrant’s Hill Road hut in August.
“The existing roof has come to the end of its 30 or 40 years,” said Steve. “It’s made of asbestos and it is dangerous.”
And Steve hopes that local businesses will get on board with the campaign.
“300 kids go down there each week and we need the new roof otherwise there will be nowhere for them to go,” said Steve.
“We will be asking for a lottery grant and are also hoping for support from businesses big and small.
“We are after people with ideas and people who want to do things to raise money, as well as people who have some sort of management experience.”
The group is planning to dedicate a plaque to the businesses who help them to reach their total, and Steve says there are plenty more fundraising ideas in the pipeline for 2012.
“We are looking for volunteers to help with this fundraising,” he said.
