Canarian students on a study trip to the UK are seeking host families in Dacorum

Get a taste of Spanish culture while promoting the British way of life by hosting youngsters visiting Dacorum from the Canary Islands.

An education programme is organising two three-week trips for up to 60 students to help young Canarian students improve their written and spoken English.

The scheme, run by the Herts and Essex English School, is seeking host families to put up students during their visit during June and July.

As well as Dacorum, the pupils – aged between 13 and 16 and typically from Tenerife, La Palma and Gran Canaria – will also be posted in other areas of the county.

The ‘Children in Britain’ programme has seen Canarian students travelling to Herts every summer for more than 35 years.

School owner Elizabeth Williams said: “For local families, this is an ideal opportunity to find out about Spanish Life.

“Children of host families will also often develop an interest in foreign languages, through trying to communicate with their young Spanish guests, and so this is a great way to give English children the chance to share a rewarding experience.

“It is also a great way to make some extra money perhaps for a family holiday.”

The visiting students have a full and varied programme featuring English lessons, day trips and acitivities so will be out for most of the day, though are expected to spend evenings and weekends speaking English with their host families.

Elizabeth added: “We have a long list of Canarian students who would love to spend time in England.

“We have some wonderful host families in the area, but we desperately need more to enable as many students as possible to make the trip”.
