A SINGER who has previously been a support act for Pixie Lott has made it through to the regional finals of a music competition.

Sam Jones, 22, of Hilltop, Redbourn, has been put through to the next stage of the annual Live & Unsigned Competition which will take place in April.

Sam, who sings a mixture of soul and Motown music, has previously had a hit dance single released in 2010 called Feels So Good under the stage name of Dakota Ray.

Following the song’s success she supported singer Pixie Lott during a performance in Ibiza, but later decided that dance music isn’t where her true passion resides.

Sam, who is a dental nurse, said: “The music I write has a retro sound, similar to Motown, soul and blues music.

“I’ve got a lot of different influences but I particularly like Otis Reading, Chuch Berry and Ray Charles.

“You can do covers in the competition but because of the live nature of it I felt it was important to go in with my own material.

“The competition is a good opportunity to test the water with my material, although I wouldn’t be put off regardless of how I do.”

Sam has always been into singing but it was a competition at school that helped her overcome her shyness. The next stage of the competition is being held in Camden on April 1.
