A GAZETTE MP denies putting in an expenses claim for 3p despite what was written in a national newspaper.

The Sun reported last week that MPs have been paid hundreds of tiny expenses - the smallest of which went to South West Herts MP David Gauke.

But the Treasury minister blamed the claim on an “administrative error” by expenses audit group the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA).

Mr Gauke said he had submitted an invoice claim for £500 for mortgage expenses on his second home in London.

But he said: “IPSA came back and said, ‘This is an incorrect claim and you have claimed 3p more than you should have done.

“But I did not want to have the list of a rejected claim on my records, as it would look bad.”

He fought to clear his name, and IPSA admitted they had made a mistake and paid him the 3p.

Mr Gauke said it was “ironic” he queried the claim to prevent negative press stories appearing - but now it looks like he claimed for just 3p.
