Mike Penning has retained his seat for a third term in Hemel Hempstead, but the Liberal Democrats suffered a shocking defeat.

The Libs finished second five years ago, overhauling the Labour Party who had held the seat from 1997-2005.

But Tring man Rabi Martins, who was no longer at the count when the declaration was made shortly after 7.30am, was one of a number of Liberals to lose their deposit for getting less than five per cent of the vote.

Green Alan Borgars and Independent candidate Brian Hall also lost their deposits, whilst UKIP were privately understood to have been disappointed at finishing third.
