As bleary-eyed motorists made their way into work early this morning, little did they know that there was an escaped cow heading in their direction.

Frightened drivers rang 999 in the fear that the animal could end up on the A41 – after seeing the Tring Park field escapee plodding towards it.

Police conducted a search of the area after the 7.30am call-out – but the creature was nowhere to be found, so they left at about 8am.

Spokesman Hannah Williams said: “There was a loose cow that had got out of its field in Tring Park.

“We went to look and could not find the cow, so someone must have put it back in its field.”
