TOWN leaders spent £15,000 replacing the astroturf at a public pitch – and it’s reopened in time for school holidays.
The Lagley Meadow pitch, near Berkhamsted Sportspace, had run into rack and ruin since it first opened about 20 years ago.
As there was no cash available for its repair, it was unclear how the work could be paid for.
But when a developer made cash available for sporting projects in return for permission to build new homes, Berkhamsted Town Council won £15,000 to replace the astroturf.
Anna Klimaszewski, who runs the Berkhamsted After School Club (BASH) from adjacent Berkhamsted Youth Centre, said: “It is just very popular – the children love it.
“The old astroturf was a lot harder and had rubber in it, whereas this one is much more like grass. If you fall over, it does not hurt so much.”
