Oil spillage causes long tailbacks on M1 near Hemel Hempstead after four-lorry smash

There were long tailbacks on the M1 this morning when four lorries were involved in a collision after an oil spill.

The Highways Agency closed the slow lane of the southbound motorway for around two hours while they made the area safe for motorists.

The spillage was between J7 – the turn-off for Hemel Hempstead – and J6A, where the M1 meets the M25. But traffic was tailing back as far as J9 – the Redbourn, Flamstead and Markyate exit.

The accident was first reported just after 9.50am and the M1 was reopened by 1pm.
