A subway running under the busy Magic Roundabout that was closed for more than 18 months for works to combat flooding problems has been submerged in water once more.

The underground walkway reopened back in June 2012 after a pump supposed to keep the subway, which is below the water table, clear and dry was finally fixed.

But, after recent weeks of downpours, the pump has failed again putting the passageway out of bounds for pedestrians.

Highways contractor for Herts County Council Ringway is dealing with the problem.

Divisional manager Matthew Kelley said: “We are aware of the flooding issues in this area.

“Ringway attended the site last night and identified an issue with the automatic pump system which contributed to the flooding.

“A replacement part is currently on order and will be replaced once received.

“We were able to remove the water manually on Monday night and will monitor the situation until the replacement part arrives.”
