A mum gave birth in a Grovehill car park after her baby boy decided to make a rapid entrance into the world.

Baby Louis was born safe and well in the back of his grandfather’s car outside flats in Penrose Court in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Dad Terry Davis was guided through the ordeal by a 999 operator on the other end of his mobile phone after third time mum Elaine Davis suddenly felt the overwhelming urge to push.

Her contractions had started at around midnight on Saturday after the 31-year-old, who also celebrated her birthday yesterday, had returned home from her baby shower with family and friends.

“It was very irregular so I wasn’t too concerned and just had a bath,” said Elaine.

“We phoned the hospital and they said phone back in an hour. So we phoned back later and were planning to go in. As we got outside the flat my waters went and I knew that I had to push. I said to my husband: ‘You need to phone an ambulance.’ It was a bit crazy.”

But before paramedics could get to the Hemel Hempstead car park, calm under pressure Terry, 32, had delivered the baby boy within 10 minutes.

Elaine, who works part-time at Body Shop in the town centre, said: “My husband had phoned 999 and they talked him through what to do. He was very calm and he just stayed in control and took over. He was really good.

“I was told by the doctors that he did an excellent job.”

Baby Louis was born at 4.15am on Sunday weighing 8lb 7oz.

Elaine’s mum June Anderson, who missed the drama, said: “You never think it is going to happen in your family.

“Elaine said she saw the lights going on and off in a few of the flats and the curtains were twitching.”

Mum and baby were taken to Luton & Dunstable Hospital, where Elaine had originally planned to have her baby, who was due to arrive today.

The mum needed a blood transfusion but the pair were back at home on Monday evening.

Louis is little brother to Emily, aged five, who was delivered by planned Ceasarian section and 14-month-old Max, who arrived into the world after around 12 hours of labour.
