KNITTERS are being called to help raise funds for the elderly by making more than half a million hats.
Age Concern Dacorum has launched its Big Knit 2011 campaign and is asking people to knit little woolly hats to put on top of innocent smoothie bottles.
For each be-hatted smoothie sold innocent will give 25p to Age UK’s Spread the Warmth campaign which will help fund national and local winter projects.
The charity is aiming for 650,000 hats and has tasked its Dacorum branch with knitting 5,500 hats by Friday, September 30.
Knitters can contact Age Concern Dacorum to get a simple hat pattern while wool and needles can be donated to the Volunteer Centre, in Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead.
Chief executive of Age Concern Dacorum Atifa Ali Khan said: “Winter can be a difficult time of year for many older people. The funds raised locally by The Big Knit will go a long way towards supporting various local winter projects.
The be-hatted smoothies will go on sale from November 16 to 30.
Money raised from hats sent to the Age Concern office at Half Moon Yard, in High Street, Hemel Hempstead, will benefit old folk in the area.
