A reading event designed to get children into books kicks off today.

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge has a ‘mythical maze’ theme and encourages kids to collect stickers as they take on the task of reading six books during the holidays.

Readers of all ages and abilities can take part, and those who complete the challenge will be invited to a special awards ceremony where they will receive a certificate and a medal. Participants will also be entered into a prize draw for a golden ticket to an exclusive author event or a family ticket to Warner Bros Studios.

Frances Button, Herts County Council cabinet member for libraries, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is primarily about having fun and enjoying books.

“In addition, research has shown that children who have taken part are more likely to have maintained or even improved their reading levels when returning to school than those who did not.”

Mythical maze packs will be available in Herts libraries from today through to September 6, and children can enjoy fun, games and related activities by clicking here.
