Bus company Arriva is busy totting up the final tally of votes in a competition to name a fleet of brand new buses after Hemel Hempstead heroes.

Voting has now closed on the campaign to narrow down a shortlist of ten names to the final seven, and the company says hundreds of entries flooded in via social media.

The shortlist included the first names of brave murder victims Billy Dove and Frank Mason, former Gazette editor Tom Price, Olympic hero Max Whitlock and Apsley papermaker John Dickinson – but the overall winning entries have not yet been revealed.

Arriva’s Linsey Frostick said: “The response to our appeal has been truly amazing and we have received some incredible feedback from people who have campaigned tirelessly in hope of seeing their friend, family member or hero immortalised on one of our buses. We have been very touched by some of the lovely messages.”

The seven new single deck buses are already in operation on the number 2 route in Hemel Hempstead, but will soon be adorned with brass plaques bearing the winning names.
