Watch out for these people if you’re in Hemel Hempstead town centre on Saturday – but they might be a shadow of their former selves.

Pictured are this year’s fundraising contestants in the Hospice Of St Francis Biggest Loser event – but since they posed for the camera at the start of their slimathon they have shed a staggering 29 stone in seven weeks.

They’ll be meeting and greeting at the Riverside Shopping Centre and the Asda store in Hillfield Road to drum up support for another key fundraiser organised by the Northchurch-based good cause – next month’s annual Midnight Walk.

In the Biggest Loser, the group competing against each other to see who can lose the highest percentage of their body weight over a 12 week period.

There are 15 women and five men in the running, receiving weekly personal training sessions at Sportspace and a tailored nutritionist programme from Alyson Carter of Nutrition 4 Life to help them shed weight and adjust to a healthier lifestyle.

Exercise is a key part of the programme, and the group has signed up to take part in the Midnight Walk on Saturday, June 29 – even though their personal challenge comes to an end on June 2.

Hospice community fundraising manager Harriet Karia said: “Our biggest losers are on track to lose a huge percentage of their individual body weights and with it are not only making a huge impact on their own lives but also on Hospice funds – raising hundreds of pounds for us.

“They’re all undertaking loads of events to raise their sponsorship and I’m delighted they get on so well that they’ve agreed to walk our Midnight Walk as a team at the end of June.

“At this rate they’ll be speeding towards the finishing line with their new found body confidence and fitness levels.”
