Going homeless for charity

Volunteers raised about £2,000 for five charities by sleeping rough all night.

More than 150 people took part in the annual ‘sleep out’ for Queensway-based homelessness charity DENS in Hemel Hempstead and four other homelessness help groups.

It reached -4oC during the event outside St Albans Abbey between Friday night and Saturday morning, and it snowed too.

Jenny Mass, fundraising manager for DENS, said: “We had some very brave people taking part. While the weather was a hindrance for some people, others made that extra effort.”

Among them were Margaret Griffiths, Dacorum Borough Council’s housing chief, Susan Burton-Shaw (left) who turned 50 on the night and courageous teachers and students from St George’s School in Harpenden.
