YOUNGSTERS from Ashlyns School got a taste of life as a firefighter during a special course at Hemel Hempstead Fire Station.
The pupils took part in a 10-week course to boost their self-confidence and build teamwork skills.
Fourteen students from the Berkhamsted school completed the course, which formed part of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
Teacher Sarah Sibeon said: “The students were very keen and eager to attend. Sickness levels have dropped since the course started.
“There is undoubtedly a noticeable difference in most of the people who take part by the end of the scheme. Their confidence and self esteem improves no end.”
The course involves ladder pitching and climbing, pumping and delivering water, moving around in smoke with guide lines and fire spread.
Jack Daw, community fire safety co-ordinator for Dacorum, said: “The scheme is fantastic. It gives young people a chance to be involved in something which makes a real difference to their lives.”
The course was designed and run by firefighters Stuart Turner, Dan Blackburn, James Watt and Les Dawson.
“They really enjoy planning and delivering these sessions,” Mr Daw said.
