Faith calendar: Hindu festival of Diwali
Diwali – also known as the festival of lights – is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn every year.
This year, it begins next Thursday, October 23.
The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair.
The festival preparations and rituals typically extend over a five day period, preceded by the cleaning, renovation or decoration of their homes.
On Diwali night, Hindus dress up in new clothes or their best outfits and light up diyas – lamps and candles – inside and outside their homes.
My father, together with countless servicemen, faced danger and death in World War 1. Going over the top from the trenches, they knew that their life could be snuffed out as one does a candle. My father trusted God and believed in Jesus as the one who died to save him from the consequences of sin, but also, was the one who would be with him in all situations . When death was an imminent possibility he trusted God that his soul would be safe in heaven. It raises the question for all of us : ‘How will we face death and eternity?’ Are you ready and certain that all will be well? If not, trust Jesus today. He died for you to make eternal lifein heaven possible. Don’t delay. No one knows how many days they have left.
