School place plan could see choice increase

A CONSULTATION has begun on plans to increase the number of schools parents can apply to in the future.

Currently mums and dads in Herts can choose three school preferences for their children.

Now the county council is seeking views on a proposal to increase this number to four for all schools.

Most of the county’s neighbouring local authorities allow more than three preferences and the council chiefs hopes an increase will reduce any perceived unfairness from parents.

Councillor Frances Button, who oversees education and skills, said: “I hope as many people as possible will respond to this consultation as we really want to hear what they think. Admission arrangements impact upon all children and it is very important that the views of all communities are taken into account.”

The consultation, which began on Tuesday January 3, will run until February 29.
