A cycle shop had to keep its doors closed on Saturday after a crook raided the premises overnight making off with the cash till.

Workers fear the man, who has been captured on the shop’s CCTV footage, may have visited Berkhamsted’s Lovelo Cycle Works, in Dwight’s Yard off High Street, previously to work out the store’s layout.

Owner Mark Harris said: “There wasn’t a lot of damage. He was in and out within a minute. It was really quick.

“The charity shops got hit a couple of weeks ago and I think it is probably the same sort of people. I think they are just targeting tills because otherwise they would have gone for the bikes, which are worth more.

“He knew what he wanted and weirdly I think he had been in and scoped the place out before. He knew where everything was.

“It could be someone we know, which is even worse.”

The crook was wearing a grey hoodie top with the hood up and jeans.

“I think he was probably on his own but there could have been someone driving,” said Mark.

Police were alerted to the break-in because the shop’s alarm system is linked to the emergency services and further security improvements have now been made at the store.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Herts Constabulary via the non-emergency number 101 and quote reference D2/15/249.
