Warning to watch out for rebate scam

FRAUDSTERS have been posing as officers from the council tax department and telling people they may be entitled to a rebate.

Dacorum Borough Council is warning residents about the scam which sees crooks give out a reference and telephone number promising a refund of up to £7,000.

Group manager for revenues, benefits and fraud at the council, Chris Boylett, said: “The council is not calling residents about council tax rebates. We would provide any information about refunds in writing.

“Unfortunately there are a number of scams like this. If you receive a call do not call the number you are given, instead report it to the police on 0845 3300 222.”

Those who think they may have given their bank account details to a hoax caller should contact their bank for advice.
