Dacorum Borough Council’s efforts to help tackle homelessness and provide affordable homes has earned it a nomination in the UK Housing Awards.
The local authority has been shortlisted as an outstanding strategic local authority for the 19th annual awards event, which has attracted more then 250 entries throughout the country.
The borough has been recognised for the lead role its Strategic Housing service has taken in delivering change and demonstrating a commitment to preventing homelessness and providing affordable homes for local people.
It is now one of seven left in the running for the Outstanding Strategic Local Authority of the year.
Portfolio holder for housing Margaret Griffiths said: “I am delighted that Strategic Housing have been shorted listed for an award. The housing department is on a journey of continuous improvement to respond better with and to the needs of our residents.
“Nomination for this ward is an external validation that we are on the right track and recognition of all the hard work put in by the department.”
The winners will be revealed at a ceremony in a London Hotel.
Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning congratulated the council on being recognised in this year’s awards.
He said: “Dacorum’s Strategic Housing Group has done some great work in supporting the homeless and managing housing allocations as well as working together with private landlords. With the new council houses and homeless hostel currently under construction, it is clear that Dacorum is leading the way in tackling these complicated issues.”
Emma Maier, editor of Inside Housing which is organising the event alongside the Chartered Institute of Housing added: “The quality of the entries rose again this year so even to get this far is an amazing achievement. In the face of some really stiff competition, Dacorum Borough Council has shown it is performing at the highest level – well done!”
