Charity hike duo launch fundraising plea

Time is running out for a pair of charity hikers who desperately need to raise enough money to take part in their peak-climbing challenge.

Gemma Abson and partner Rich Hudson, both 29, are planning to take part in the National 3 Peaks Challenge in July, which involves scaling Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon - all in 24 hours.

They decided to raise money for Brain Tumour UK after Gemma’s grandfather Alan Milner was diagnosed with a tumour in late 2012. Sadly he passed away in early 2013, but Gemma wanted to take on a challenge in his memory. The charity helps fund research into new treatments as well as providing support and information to those affected.

The couple signed up for 3 Peaks through website Do It For Charity, run by charity event organiser Skyline. The company pays for travel and guides during the challenge, so requires those taking part to raise a certain amount of money to cover those costs.

Gemma and Rich need to raise £800 by Friday, April 19, but if they do not they will be unable to take part in the challenge to scale the UK’s highest peaks in a day. They have raised £463 so far, most of which was accumulated through online donations and a cake sale held at Gemma’s workplace.

Gemma, who lives in Tring with Rich, said: “The cake sale raised over £100, but ever since then the donations have just dribbled in. It’s really hard trying to get people to help out, and to find venues that will hold fundraising events.

“I was thinking of holding a charity darts match, as my grandad was very into his darts. We’ve thought about doing a charity pub quiz as well, but it’s very time consuming, especially when we’re hiking every weekend in all weathers!”
