CONSTRUCTION companies are being called upon to give older teenagers work experience in the industry.
A new scheme called Experience Construction has been devised by the Sector Skills Council CITB-ConstructionSkills and Industry Training Board to give more young people an important first step in their career and provide opportunities directly in their local area.
It is aimed at giving young people between the ages of 16-18 the opportunity to enrol on a two – four week work experience placement.
Experience Construction is one way of helping a generation of young people to try out new careers before deciding on their future, particularly those who are not employed or in education and training, and to find opportunities on their doorstep.
Mick O’Flynn, regional delivery manager for CITB-ConstructionSkills Central said: “This is a great opportunity for construction companies to put themselves forwards and make a crucial contribution to the industry. While the sector still faces challenges, it is important that we are still making sure that quality new entrants continue to enter the workforce to prevent a skills gap in the future.
“I now urge construction companies to contact us to find out more information on signing up to the scheme and offering someone this experience and insight to our industry.”
The scheme also gives construction companies the opportunity to assess potential apprentices in a live working environment.
CITB-ConstructionSkills is looking for construction companies across England to support up to 1,000 work placements and to sign up to the scheme to deliver 500 apprenticeship places following the work experience programme. The work experience placements will take place through to July.
